Shaping the Future of Dairy Processing: TORPOL at the 4th International Conference on Separation & Drying Technologies

The global dairy industry stands at a pivotal juncture, marked by dynamic shifts in production, market demand, and technological advancements. As we approach 2025, the need for innovative processing solutions has never been more critical. In response to these challenges and opportunities, we are pleased to announce the 4th International Conference on Separation & Drying Technologies, scheduled for March 25-26, 2025, in Kempten, Germany. This conference aims to bring together industry leaders, researchers, and professionals to explore technology that will shape the future of dairy processing.

Global Dairy Industry: Current Landscape and Challenges

Production Trends

In 2024, global milk production experienced a modest increase, with projections indicating a rise to nearly 981 million tonnes, a 1.5% uptick from the previous year. This growth is primarily driven by significant expansions in Asia, notably in countries like India, Pakistan, and China. For instance, India’s milk output is projected to reach 243 million tonnes, reflecting a 2.8% increase. This surge is attributed to favorable monsoon conditions, increased dairy herd sizes, and supportive government policies. Similarly, Pakistan and China anticipate growth rates of 3% and 2.9%, respectively, bolstered by investments in large-scale dairy farming and enhanced production efficiencies.

However, this global growth is not uniform. European milk production is expected to see a marginal increase of 0.6%, with countries like the United Kingdom and Ukraine facing potential declines due to economic and geopolitical challenges. Environmental regulations and high input costs have also contributed to stagnation in regions such as the European Union, where milk production remained flat in 2023.

Market Dynamics

The dairy market has witnessed significant price fluctuations. The FAO Dairy Price Index (DPI) averaged 128 in 2024, marking a 17.2% increase from the beginning of the year. This surge is largely due to constrained exportable supplies in key exporting regions, geopolitical tensions affecting supply chains, and unusual weather patterns impacting major producers.

Butter prices, in particular, have seen a sharp rise, with international quotations increasing by 35.1% from January to October 2024. This escalation reflects robust demand amid tighter inventories in Western Europe and seasonally declining production in Oceania. Cheese and whole milk powder (WMP) prices have also experienced upward trends, driven by strong global demand, especially from regions like Southeast Asia and the Near East.

Technological Innovations

In response to these challenges, the dairy industry is increasingly turning to technological innovations to enhance efficiency and sustainability. Advanced separation and drying technologies have emerged as critical components in modern dairy processing, enabling producers to improve product quality, reduce energy consumption, and minimize waste.
